This book covers the new Win32 features for Delphi 2007. It was published before the release of RAD Studio 2007 so it doesn't cover any .Net or C++, to which most Delphi developers care little about anyway (although the ASP.Net stuff is looking pretty cool). It also gives you an overview of the pitfalls you may encounter when upgrading from a previous version (too late for me as I've already been through this).
I found the book an easy and enjoyable read (for a technical book) and I learnt heaps of tidbits from it, some of which I'll probably share with you in future movies. It's also nice and short being only about 250 pages, the main reason for its brevity is that doesn't include topics that haven't changed since Delphi 7 (Marco's last book on Delphi 2005 was over 900 pages long).
The book is published by Lulu, who do print on demand - that is to say that when you buy a book from them they print a copy especially for you, if nothing else that should give you the warm fuzzies when your personal copy of the Delphi 2007 Handbook arrives in the mail. However it probably means you won't see it in bookstores or on Amazon.
Who should buy this book? Well if you've upgraded to Delphi 2007 from a previous version then you should certainly get this book. If you are thinking about upgrading then it might be worth investing in this book as it will give you an idea of whether the upgrade is worth it. If you're new to Delphi then this book by its self is probably not going to help you too much, however you could buy it in conjunction with one of Marco's older books (Mastering Delphi 7 or Mastering Delphi 2005) which you may be able to get cheap second hand. However if you are wanting to learn about .Net then this book is going to disappoint.
Having purchased this book I have to say I am pretty happy with it and felt that it was pretty good value for money - however I'm the books target audience - experienced with Delphi and interested in new features on the Win32 side.
If you fit into this category then you should.... Buy your copy now!
ps. You can be doubly assured of the honesty of this review as I'm not able to get my tiny commission from Amazon on this one - so far I I've earnt about enough to ship a book to New Zealand, however not enough to actually buy one.
